A Well-Mannered Young Wolf by Jean Leroy

Bibliography
Leroy, J., & Maudet, M. (2016). A well-mannered young wolf. Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans Books for Young Readers.

Plot summary
This wolf was raised to have manners. On his first hunting trip on his own he captures a rabbit and allows him to request a last wish. The rabbit asks for a story so the little wolf goes back home to grab a book, to his surprise the rabbit did not keep his promise and left. The wolf continues to hunt and catches a chicken. The chicken as well tricks the wolf and sends him in search of an instrument for a song as his last wish. Lastly, the wolf captures a boy. The boy keeps his promise and stays until the wolf returns to give him his last wish unlike his other preys. The wolf was surprised and allowed him to show the drawing to his friends who by luck are the chicken and rabbit. The wolf then lets the boy go in exchange eats the two preys that had lied to him.

Critical Analysis
A young wolf is trying to devour his prey, but before he can he must honor their final wishes. Unlike many portrayals of wolfs as villains this wolf has a code of ethics. Though, his would-be meals aren’t quite as honorable. This book was originated from France and translated into English when released in the U.S.
There are not many cultural markers or at least I could not identify them. It is a dark and humorous children’s book. A good book to discuss the concepts of good, evil, honesty, and consequences with children. It allows for young readers to reflect on actions and consequences.
The story contains comic like illustrations that will capture reader’s attention. The color pallet used is limited, but the characters are drawn in a way one can see how there expressions change throughout. The story itself will have readers flipping the pages.

Review Excerpts
Publishers Weekly: "This wicked gem of a story from Leroy and Maudet proves that manners matter, even when one isn't doing something terribly polite. . . . Maudet's airy, lighthearted cartooning bolsters the comic timing of Leroy's fablelike tale."

Booklist: "A palette of rich reds, yellows and browns against plentiful white spaced pages contribute to this cockeyed tale of politeness gone awry. Klassen fans rejoice-another twisted ending!"
