Transcript:

Me: Good morning sweetheart welcome to the library.

Student:  Morning. Miss can someone help me find some books.

Me:  Yes, I am Mrs. Flores. What would you like to accomplish today?

Student:  My teacher said I needed to catch up on my AR points. I wanted to read some books on sports.

Me:  Okay that sounds great. I can help you get started. Is there a specific sport you prefer?

Student: Well I like basketball, soccer, baseball, and football.

Me:  Which one is your favorite?

Student:  My favorites are baseball and football.

Me:  Ok.  Let me look at the online database and our catalog.  I can show you how to access both of those and use them.  If you go to the school website and click on the library tab there you will be directed to the available resources.  For instance, if you click on the catalog icon it will direct you to look for books available in the library.  In the search box, let’s type in football and click on “Keywords”. We’ll put it in quotes and check the results from there.  Something you should keep in mind is the filters that are in place for the school setting.  You may find more resources in the public library.

Student:  My mom sometimes takes me. Can I also take AR quizzes on those books?

Me: Yes you may you can verify by logging into the AR Renaissance page and checking if they can be found there.

Student: Can I check out more than one book?

Me: Yes you may the library allows you to check out two books at a time. With the keyword search we just did, it returned several links. Just glancing at them, here is a book that could be of interest to you called The Super Bowl For Children: The Amazing Story of the Biggest Game in Football.  If you click on it gives you a summary.  If you scroll further down, you can see there are several other books that you may want to look at. The call number lets you know where books are located. Now, let’s minimize that window so you can go back to it. After searching the title of the books in Goodreads it seems to be a good choice.

Let’s start a new search and type in a different set of keywords to hopefully help us locate some books on baseball.  There are also books on sports in our online websites such as Storytimeonline and Tumblebooks. These are audio books if that is something that you would be interested in.
Student:  Can I check out one book and use the websites to find more books to read?

Me:  Yes, you may if that’s what you want.

Student:  Yes, I want to try using the websites. I have never used them and I think I can read more books using them.

Me:  Let me show you how to navigate through these websites then. If you go to the library page again. You will see the icons for Storylineonline and Tumblebooks. If you click on Storylineonline it will direct you to the webpage. In the right side of the corner click on the magnify glass and search keywords such as baseball or sports. While you do that I will go and find the book for you.

Student: Thank you.

Me: Did you find everything you were looking for?

Student: I found a book called Catching the Moon the summary says it has to do with baseball.

Me:  That’s great. Would you like to look over Tumblebooks?

Student:  Can I come back later after I read these two books?

Me:  Of course. The library is opened from 7:30 in the morning to 4:30 in the afternoon. May I help you in anything else before checking out your book.

Student:  No mam, thank you that is all I needed.

Me: Have a wonderful day if you need anything we are here to help. Let your teacher know that if she needs to send more students the library is always open. Before you go I printed out the public library hours for you just in case you would like to visit.

Student: I’ll come back after I read these thank you again.

Me: Anytime, have a great day.

Reflection:
Since starting school again I have been frequenting libraries way more often. I have yet to have a bad experience. Even with the online reference question assignment the librarian was able to answer all my questions. I want to do a good job once I become a librarian myself. I thought this assignment was a great way to learn.  I looked back at the textbook, read the RUSA guidelines, used Goodreads for reviews, looked into the schools website, and reflected on my past experiences.

I work with middle school children, but for this assignment I wanted to try doing another grade cluster. Since I don’t know if I will be working with the same grade levels I am currently at I thought it would be good practice. Different age levels will have different resource needs. I thought of the reasons this age come to the library. Many come for the joy of reading and others because they need to meet a specific purpose.

I talked to veteran reading teachers at my school that have taught in elementary before. They all said that they push AR points in elementary schools way more than it is emphasized in the secondary for some reason. A goal is to create lifelong readers that read for enjoyment. When students come into the library I want to provide great service, but as well make sure they visit again.

I wanted first to assess what the patron was looking for. Since he came in asking for books to take AR quizzes as a librarian on must find books not to discourage the patron from reading. After some questioning I narrowed down what type of interests the reader had and a way to start the search. Verbal and nonverbal cues are important. Smiling and tone of voice are good ways to make the student visiting the library feel at ease. This as well can be clues if one is meeting the needs of the request. I wanted the patron to feel comfortable.

In addition, I wanted the patron to know that there was different types of resources available as well as other places to acquire resources. At this early age students might not be aware of online resources that can be used. I made sure to address it as well and let the student know that there was other venues for acquiring books. I wanted to direct the patron to all the sources he could use to meet his request as well as find books that he liked.

Closing the transaction I wanted the patron to leave having his request met. I assured him he could come by if he needed anything else. I as well gave him the hours the public library is opened. I asked if there was anything else to guarantee the patron has acquired the information he wanted.
