How to use EBSCOhost
When I introduce a new website to my student’s one of the main problems is logging in and them learning the new features. The YouTube channel Calypso Gilstrap goes over a resource that many students will come to use and the steps to access it which I find very useful. It is helpful for students in middle school, high school, and college for at some point they will be required to conduct research. The video explains the use of EBSCOhost. It talks about the features and the valuable information one can find. It also gives students the citation of the works they decided to use. She also goes over how to filter information depending on one’s search.  It lets students know that information can be bookmarked to save for later.

2)      Which is the video that the students would like the best?

Tiger Visits The Norman High Library
Based on views and the one that caught my attention the most I would choose Tiger Visits The Norman High Library as the video by Calypso Gilstrap that I would like the best. It is relatable to the students. The main character in the video is the school’s mascot which attracts more student viewers. It is entertaining while still promoting library services such as print and nonprint resources. The video also takes in consideration the students by having the mascot interact with them.

Finding and Using Wikimedia Commons Images
It is important for students to learn about copyright policy. It is also necessary for them to know resources that they can use that abide by those rules. Wikimedia Commons is a resource that not many students are aware of. They YouTube video gives a quick summary of what the user can do with this webpage. I think that it is the most helpful for it introduces a source that student need to know about. Many just think that they can copy and paste any picture on the internet. Though, they website would make it easier for them find images that follow copyright laws.

The Importance of Choice for Igniting Student Passion and Learning Through Research Projects
Videos that show the student population will most likely get more views. For this reason the video that I think students would like best The Importance of Choice for Igniting Student Passion and Learning Through Research Projects. It talks about an important issue and what a fellow peer did to promote awareness. It’s a way to motivate others to be creative and demonstrate their work. It is also shows how the library was involved to promote student involvement.

PikesvilleHighschool FAFSA

As a first generation college student getting ready to go to college was a scary process. Luckily, I was accepted into a magnet school with a smaller population and a great guidance counselor. However, majority of students are not in that position. The most helpful video in pikesvillehslibrary channel would be PikesvilleHighschool FAFSA. Many students when I was in high school did not know submitting a FAFSA application was one of the most important steps before getting to college. The video does not go over what is needed to fill out a FAFSA application, but it does bring awareness to the student population which I find just as helpful.

2)      Which is the video that the students would like the best?
AP Biology

As a student I would like to know my options for that I believe that students would like the videos on the AP classes that are offered. I thought it was a creative way to let the student population know what those classes are about. If they would provide a video about each subject it would be a great way for students to get a glimpse of what their teachers will be covering.

NHD Annotation Writing
Many times have I given instructions to tasks only to have students ask for clarification 5 seconds later. Students will be asked to write annotations at some point. The video on the channel going over the main points of writing a proper annotation can assist many students. It reminds me of a flipped classroom approach.

2)      Which is the video that the students would like the best?

Taylor Swift hates overdue library books
This channel has many overdue book parodies which most students would like. The videos based on Taylor Swift songs have views in the thousands. The videos have popular songs playing the background though the lyrics have changed and students appear on the video.  It’s a great idea to keep students coming to the library to return and check out books. I like that YouTube channel is student centered and I believe that that is why some videos have so many views.

Videos

The following videos are great ideas to help students while on or off campus. It is also a good way to acquire student attention, engagement, and inform. After viewing these videos I can see that YouTube can be used as an informational source. Creating videos can also be a way to promote library resources. Its a source that students commonly use and a way to reach them such as turning in late library books or promoting new reading material. Its can as well be a way to communicate a message with student, parents, and the community.

Synopsis

Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches and sleeping with her "head-for-the-hills bag". In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her father's junkyard.

Her father forbade hospitals, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. The family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education and no one to intervene when one of Tara's older brothers became violent.

Then, lacking any formal education, Tara began to educate herself. She taught herself enough mathematics and grammar to be admitted to Brigham Young University, where she studied history, learning for the first time about important world events like the Holocaust and the civil rights movement. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge. Only then would she wonder if she'd traveled too far, if there was still a way home.

Scan QR Codes to access book trailer

QR Codes

QR codes are a great and safe way to lead students to text, links, videos, and images. It is a way to ensure students follow the proper path to a source. Due to QR codes being so versatile they can be integrated into the classroom and library. In the library they can be used for students to view book trailers, find book reviews, and website links. QR codes can also be used to answer common student questions like how to access the online catalog. A librarian can also make a list of highlighted books of the week and make it into a QR code so students know popular titles.

  1. Your review of Educated is very enticing! I have been interested in that book anyway, but this gives more information about it than I have previously read. I'll have to add it to the Christmas reading list. Thanks for the info!

  2. You brought up an interesting point about QR codes. It definitely is an quick, convenient method to spread information, but even more importantly-it's a safe and direct medium to get students to a resource you want to share. It's easy for students to get side-tracked or distracted when searching the web, but a QR code takes them exactly where you want to take them, which makes this tool even more beneficial in the library than I previously thought.

  3. I loved reading Educated last year and was reminded by your book trailer just how good of a book it really is. I think you captured the setting by the images you chose to include. I also like your idea of making a list of highlighted books of the week attached to a QR code for quick access by students.
